    Description

Indians of Louisiana: Autograph Letter Signed ("Ned"). Four pages, 8" x 10", Plaisance, Louisiana, January 28, 1857, concerning an orphaned "little Indian", possibly Caddo, taken in by a plantation owner: "I have enslaved him to all intents & purposes only I don't work him. Everybody calls him my Indian."

    More Information:

In part: "Have I ever told you about my little Indian? I have one here; One day a neighboring overseer came to me with the little fellow behind him on his horse. He had found him in the negro quarter, & could make heads neither tails of him, or was in doubt whether he was Indian, runaway , or free mulatto, as he spoke very few words of English. . . . I took him in & have installed him as my servant, in fact I have enslaved him to all intents & purposes only I don't work him. Everybody calls him my Indian, & a very good little boy he is. . . . His name is Joe." The letter then reveals the story of the boy's past: His mother was an Indian who "was brutally beaten so that she died, by his father John Lewis, a notorious rascal who had previously killed two indians." Lewis met his doom in a gunfight leaving "Little Joe" an orphan. At the top left of page one is a drawing of the boy with his crossbow. Written next to the drawing, "Ye Indian. Little Joe."
