Important 1814 James Monroe Letter Signed Regarding Recovery of "two valuable negro men" who have gone over to the British. Written at the "Department of State, June 21, 1814" to one Col. Wadsworth. 7.5" x 9.5". Very fine but for two old tape repairs to fine horizontal separations along the original fold lines.

Writing as Secretary of State, Monroe instructs the Colonel to assist in the recovery of two runaway slaves. "Sir, Mr Thomas E. Grantt, in a letter to me under date of the 17th instant, represents that two valuable negro men, belonging to him, have gone off to the enemy, and solicits the favor of a flag for the purpose of endeavoring to reclaim them. If any opportunity of communicating with the British Squadron in the Patuxent should occur, and Mr. Grantt's object can be effected without inconvenience of detriment to the public service, you are requested to afford him such facilities for the recovery of his property as may be in your power. I have the honor to be, Sir, Very respectfully, your mo. ob. sev. Jas. Monroe ." Still in the original folder in which it was purchased from legendary autograph dealer King Hostick in 1956. A pencil notation confirms a selling price of $27.50. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
