    Hugh Judson Kilpatrick: War-date Autograph Letter Signed. 5.25" x 8" ALS on graph paper, Washington, D.C., December 13, 1862, 1p. docketed on verso, to New York Governor Edwin Morgan, signed "J. Kilpatrick Lt. Col. 2d. N. Y. Cav." Kilpatrick asks for a promotion to full colonel. "... I feel that I am entitled to the promotion, having been in command of my regiment in every skirmish and battle in which it has been engaged..." Vertical fold with old tape repair on verso, showing through somewhat. Hugh Judson Kilpatrick (1836-1881), known as "Kill-Cavalry Kilpatrick", was a flamboyant cavalry commander and Brigadier General, most famous for leading the unsuccessful raid on Richmond in February 1864 in an attempt to free Union prisoners of war.
