Horace Mann Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 6.75" x 8.5", August 4, 1849. Horace Mann (1796-1859) was a well-known educator, abolitionist, member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and brother-in-law of legendary author Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), best known for the novel The Scarlet Letter. In this letter to P. Greeley of West Newton, Massachusetts, Mann writes in full: "Dear Sir, The bearer, Pliny E. Chase Esq. of Philadelphia is a teacher of youth, and a gentleman of learning and science. He is preparing an arithmetic for schools, and wishes for some information about the values of coins, which you may be able to furnish him. Any attention you will pay to Mr. Chase will be accepted as a personal favor by yours very truly, Horace Mann. P. S. I trust it will be pleasant to you to see one man who does not come after an office." The letter is in good condition with four horizontal folds and several light creases. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.
