Description

Hetty Green, The Witch of Wall Street, Rare Typed Document Signed "Hetty H.R. Green", one page, 8" x 11", on the letterhead of Chemical National Bank, New York, June 30, 1896. Some docketing, with a pencil note at bottom concerning provenance, not affecting text. Hetty Green was richer, and cheaper, than any other woman of her day. A brilliant operator in the Stock Exchange, her chief business in Wall Street was confined to the lending of money. Her native shrewdness, intensified by single-handed combat with the financial powers of her time, steeled her personality for conflict and perhaps subordinated the more womanly traits. She dressed shabbily, haggled over petty purchases, sought free medical treatment at charity clinics, and carried a gun - "mostly," she said, "to protect myself against lawyers." Her life's work, however, was money: she was the country's leading purchaser of mortgages. Here is a fine example of the Witch at work. "This is to certify that the Mortgage of Sarah A. Tileston of Boston, Mass., for Twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) dated 23rd day of June, 1891... is hereby extended at the rate of four per cent (4%) per annum July 1, 189l - and the Gold Clause is hereby eliminated therefrom." Boldly signed, and in fine condition. Very rare. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
