    Description

Herbert Hoover Illuminated Manuscript Signed as president. Includes signatures of forty-eight governors, including Franklin D. Roosevelt as the governor of New York. One sheet, 20" x 28.25", [Washington, D.C.], 1931. This Illuminated manuscript is entitled "The Spirit of '31'" and is colored with bright red, blue, and gold. Each governor has signed along either the left or right margins, while President Hoover's signature rests in the center below a watercolor of the seal of the United States.

The optimistic message of the manuscript was designed to provide hope to the American people in the early years of the Great Depression. "The President of the United States and the Governors of the forty-eight states composing this great nation, call upon the American people to make 1931 a year that will go down in our history as marking the greatest 'come-back' ever staged by the business men, the farmers and the working folk of the United States. . . . Conditions have been depressing during the last year and the great heart of our people has been stirred to the speedy and effective measures aimed at ameliorating the hardships. . . . Now the clouds are breaking. . . . Let us all help them under the guidance of President Hoover, rout the specter of want and uncertainty and make this country the permanent abiding place of a happy and contented people." The manuscript is affixed to a larger stiff paperboard (overall size of 21.75" x 31.5"). Minor toning and stains to the document.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
