Harry Truman Typed Letters Signed (5) with Related Papers. Archive of letters dated from 1944 to 1971 addressed to John R. Hahn, with five personally signed by Truman. John R. Hahn was a political reporter for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, who had a friendly relationship with Truman and sent him numerous articles and cartoons.

Responding to a cartoon that depicted him being retired to a pasture, Truman wrote, "I don't know when I have had as much of a kick out of a cartoon as that one, since I left the White House", and it seems like he and Hahn shared similar political views once Truman was out of office. In reference to an editorial titled "Persecution of a Public Servant", Truman wrote (one page, 7.25" x 10.5", August 6, 1956): "Thank you very much for sending me the cartoon and the editorial from the Globe-Democrat. The article is a good one; it needed to be said. I will be expecting to see you in Chicago...Harry Truman."

The rest of the letters are from prominent political figures, including social worker and Franklin D. Roosevelt's closest advisor Harry L. Hopkins, Missouri politicians Stuart Symington and Thomas B. Curtis, Tennessee politician Estes Kefauver, Ohio Senator Robert A. Taft, future vice president Hubert Humphrey, and Edward "Ted" Kennedy.

Hahn was a large supporter of Symington and in numerous articles he heavily pushed for Symington's candidacy in the Senate. His opinion in such matters was valued, and these letters from numerous political figures illustrates how greatly respected Hahn was as a political journalist. Most letters are accompanied by their original envelopes. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Letters range from good to fine condition. Some toning, and light soiling. All have usual mail folds. All signatures are bold.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
