Description

Harry Truman Typed Letter Signed as President. "Harry Truman". One page with integral blank on White House letterhead, 7" x 8.75". Washington, D.C.; November 17, 1950. In a letter marked "Personal" to Stephen Gibbons, vice-president of Hudson Trust Company, Truman gives his thanks for a book covering Woodrow Wilson's political education, and goes on to write of the abuse suffered by previous presidents, and his reluctance to let such abuse affect him. In part: "Most Presidents have been subjected to abuse and misrepresentation. Those who were treated the worst by the public press were Jefferson, Lincoln, Grover Cleveland and Woodrow Wilson and it is interesting to observe the reactions of those Presidents to the vicious attacks that were made upon them...I've stood quite a bit of abuse myself but it doesn't bother me like it seemed to have bothered those gentlemen." This letter was written during the thirty-third president's second term, which saw him leave office one of the most loathed presidents in history - until public attitudes toward Truman warmed in the subsequent years - leaving him fondly remembered by the early sixties.

Condition: Light toning and smoothed folds, with slight soiling on the verso.
