DescriptionHarry S. Truman Free Frank Signature on a White House Envelope. 7.25" x 4.75", on a light-green envelope with printed "The White House" return address, postmarked September 23, 1948, to Edwin C. Johnson (Senator from Colorado), Washington, D.C., trivial mounting remnants on the verso, else fine condition.
Presidents of the United States enjoyed the franking privilege until 1873, when after much official abuse, it was abolished. Although Congress granted itself the frank only two years later, it was never granted again to a sitting president of the United States. We have previously offered a Franklin D. Roosevelt free frank postal cover, postmarked September 15, 1940. One of only two known to exist, it sold for $5,377 in June 2008. This is the first Truman free frank we have ever seen.
