Harry S. Truman (1884-1972), President, scarce Typed Letter Signed "Harry S Truman" as Vice President, one page, 8" x 10.5", Washington, January 25, 1945 with autograph postscript, to the earliest professional pollster, Emil Hurja, noting that he was "...more than pleased to enclose a glossy print of myself to be used in your forthcoming book..." Truman adds in a short autograph postscript below his signature: "When can you and I have another bull session on election results?" Offered together with a second Harry S. Truman, Typed Letter Signed "Harry S Truman" as Senator, one page, 8" x 10", Washington, August 9, 1940 also to Hurja thanking him for his "...telegram of congratulation. I am very thankful for the endorsement by the Democrats of Missouri." He adds a short postscript: "It was some fight". Also together with a 8.5" x 6" telegram from Hurja to Truman, Washington, August 7, 1940 reading: "If squeezing helps you will win." Contrary to popular belief, it was not John Kennedy who was the first presidential candidate to extensively use popular opinion polling, nor was Louis Harris the first presidential pollster. Emil Hurja convinced the Democratic National Committee to allow him to conduct polls for Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1932 and 1936 presidential campaigns. Obviously Truman also highly valued Hurja's counsel. A great pair of letters in very good condition. Wonderful history. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
