Grover Cleveland Autograph Letter Signed while Governor of New York. Four pages of a bifolium, 4.75" x 7.75", Albany, New York; November 10, 1883. The letter is addressed to Cleveland's future mother-in-law, Emma [Folsom], on "State of New York, Executive Chamber" stationery. Cleveland writes that he is weary of politics, which proved somewhat ironic since he was nominated as the Democratic candidate for President less than a year later. It reads in part:

"...Since my arrival here, I have been pretty well crowded with work; and half the time I felt so kind of cross, I thought I had a better not write, for fear some of my ill temper might find its way to the top of my pen...I am sick of the whole business...You don't know how I wish I could be let alone. I can have a great deal more pleasure in my own way, but I tell you I find I can't do exactly as I have a mind to..." Signed, "Grover Cleveland."

Cleveland's future wife, Frances, was away at Wells College at the time of this letter. Her father had been a longtime friend and following his death in 1875, Cleveland assumed a guardianship role over Frances. As evidenced by this letter, he remained close with Emma and her daughter for many years, culminating with Cleveland's marriage to the young Frances, aged 21, in the Blue Room at the White House in June 1886. Frances remains the youngest First Lady in history.
