Description

Grover Cleveland Autograph Letter Signed as President. Four pages of a White House letterhead bifolium, 9.75" x 8" (sight); April 17, 1887. A letter to William L Scott chastising him for his decision to absent himself from the next Congressional session. In part: "I am much surprised and disturbed to learn to day, quite directly, that you do not intent to be in your seat at the next Congress... I do not understand that you are sick of the business but that is not a sufficient reason for your abandoning the post when you can be so useful to the country... I have expected to see you daily in regards to some Pennsylvania matters that are dangling still..." Signed in full, "Grover Cleveland."
Condition: The letter is affixed to the mat at side and top edges. Toning throughout, though heavier on verso. A small tear at top corner has an old repair. Matted with an engraving of Cleveland to an overall size of 20" x 11.5".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
