Gouverneur Morris Autograph Letter Signed. One page with integral address leaf, 7.5" x 9", Philadelphia, September 22, 1785. Gouverneur Morris (1752-1816), a signer of the U.S. Constitution who authored the Preamble among other parts, is here writing to Samuel Jones of New York regarding possible legal action against the lands of Joseph Wharton, in part:

"Mr. Joseph Wharton whom I formerly mentioned to you, tells me you want to know whether any Suit is commenced in the Supreme Court against his lands. I think you had better write a Line of Enquiry to . . . the Clerk of the Supreme Court. He will be able, and I am positive willing, to give all needful information."

Large waterstain in the upper half of page one with smaller stains at the edges, one of which affects the "G" in the signature. Paper loss at the upper left corner has been repaired as has a small tear at the lower edge also running through the "G" in the signature. Folds are weakened with some separation at the right edge of the upper horizontal fold.
