Golda Meir Autograph Note . Two pages, 6.25" x 4", np, May 2, 1972. Late Prime Minister Golda Meir writes "I read on Newsweek that B.G. [Ben Gurion] said that he's willing to return everything [all the occupied territories] except Jerusalem. I know that he said it here. It is very severe if he's also saying that towards outside [of Israel] and he's now going abroad. He's also quoted there saying that there's a danger that a horrible war will breakout and it is needed to hurry and do something and that at the same time that the four (the US, France, England and the U.N.) are meeting." This historically important document reflects Ben Gurion's position concerning the future of the occupied territories on one hand and on the other hand his great statesmanship forecasting that without any political movement a horrible war will break out, which is indeed what happened. The note is a fine demonstration of the shortsightedness of Meir who was eventually surprised on October 6, 1973 when the war was launched by Egypt and Syria. The date May 2, 1972 and the name "Golda" was written by the recipient of the letter. Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan, and Israeli general, David Elazar met at 8:05 AM the morning of Yom Kippur, 6 hours before the war was to begin. Dayan began the meeting by arguing that war was not a certainty. Elazar then presented his argument, in favor of a pre-emptive attack against Syrian airfields at noon, Syrian missiles at 3:00 PM, and Syrian ground forces at 5:00 PM. Very fine condition but for rust stain from a paperclip.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
