    Description

Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette Autograph Letter Signed "Lafayette". One page of a bifolium, 6.5" x 8.25", in French, Paris; March 24, 1822. Untranslated, the letter was written after Lafayette's return to France following his participation in the American Revolution (1777-79 and 1781). It appears to be a letter of introduction for Lafayette's friend, Benjamin Constant, to a Madame Alexandre. The letter is addressed to a house in Paris on verso. Constant was a French political and religious activist, and both he and Lafayette bonded over their shared belief in liberty in France.
Condition: A few small spots of foxing on front and verso, with usual mail folds and creasing. Very light toning throughout. Paper loss on second page where it appears the margin was cut cleanly. Discoloration and small amount of paper loss where seal was broken.
