    Description

George Washington Letter Fragment with Signature. 7.5" x 2.5", mounted to a sheet of laid paper and matted and frame to an overall size of 10.5" x 8.5". There are approximately six lines written in Washington's hand, but paper loss and heavy dampstaining make the text difficult to read. Washington's signature is also incomplete, with paper loss affecting the "ng", and the last letter "n" is completely missing.

Text reads: "where among the Quarters for Peros who as wet as the rest want of without one word being said to them - I make no doubt but you wit (as you say I carry on your business with the utmost care and Industry - it behooves us to try what can be done an dI am in hopes our Crops every year will ... proof's of that care & reward you Industry - I am ... Friend & Serv.t."

A typed note below reads: "Fragment of original letter to Mr. Robert Custis, Isle of Wight, Virginia." No information could be found on Robert Custis, but it may be a relative of Martha Washington's first husband. Peros, was one of Washington's slaves. An advertisement posted by Washington in Fairfax, Virginia on August 11, 1761 listed Peros as one of 4 runaway slaves.

Condition: Very rough, with dampstaining, and heavy paper loss. Washington's signature is missing parts of the "ng" and the last "n". A fragment of the frame is missing at top right. Estimated for condition.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
