Description
George Washington Free Frank "Go: Washington" as general. One envelope, 6.75" x 3.25" (unfolded, the envelope forms a sheet which measures 13.5" x 8.25"), n.p. [General Washington's headquarters at Fredericksburg, New York], November 20, 1778. The envelope reads, "In public Service / To Brig. Genl. Wayne / J . . . [illegible] / near / Peekskill / [signed] Go: Washington." The envelope exhibits stains, as expected. On the inside, General Wayne has docketed, "20th Novr 1778 / Genl. Washington." Modern penciled notations exist above the docket. The original seal, though broken when "Mad Anthony" Wayne first opened this envelope, is still in attached. General Washington, who was headquartered at Fredericksburg throughout the fall of 1778, sent this envelope with letter (not included) to General Wayne, who was roughly fifteen miles southeast on the Hudson near Peekskill.Auction Info
