Description
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson Partial Appointment Signed "Go: Washington" and "Th: Jefferson." One partially printed document clipped, 9" x 5" (sight), Alexandria; May 21, 1793. Washington directs that John Fitzgerald was to be appointed as the local collector of customs for the port of Alexandria. Signed by Washington as President and Jefferson as Secretary of State. Countersigned by John Fitzgerald. With a paper U.S. seal intact. The document is matted and framed in a custom frame so that both sides may be visible, measuring 37.5" x 20.5" overall.John Fitzgerald, a native of Ireland, came to America in 1769 and settled in Alexandria as a partner of Valentine Peers in a mercantile business. During the Revolutionary War, he served as aide-de-camp to General Washington. After the Revolution, Fitzgerald was Mayor of Alexandria (1786-1787) before being promoted to Collector of the Customs at Alexandria.
Condition: Moderate toning. Flattened folds, with a few small holes where paper was weakened. Archival tape at the folds on verso. Clear signatures. Minor creasing to the paper seal.
