George Taylor: An Important Signed Document from the Third Rarest Signer of the Declaration of Independence. After Gwinnett and Lynch, George Taylor's is the rarest autograph among Declaration signers. Heritage has offered only a single example: a small clipped signature, rather badly stained, which sold for $5,156 in a 2013 Manuscripts auction. We are aware of one private sale of an ALS at the $50,000 level.

The rarity is not surprising, as Taylor (1716-1781) is one of the more obscure signers. A Pennsylvania ironmaster who produced cannon balls and other military items for the Continental Army, he was one of five replacements named by the Pennsylvania Assembly for Continental Congress delegate who refused to support Independence. In seven months Taylor had served out his term and was not re-nominated, after which point he lived in comparative obscurity until his death a few years later.

Offered here is an impressive large land transfer document for a parcel in Bucks County outside of Philadelphia, the area where Taylor was active. It sports a fine, bold Taylor signature with authenticity seal and testament from two witnesses. Overall display appearance is very good, with scattered mild foxing and aging. Weaknesses along fold lines have been reinforced with archival tape and several small areas of paper loss where horizontal and vertical fold lines intersect have been filled with paper restoration. The document measures 18.25" x 15.25" as shown.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
