DescriptionGeorge Sand Autograph Letter Signed to Albert Lacroix with Engraving. One page of a bifolium, 5.25" x 8.25", February 2, 1876. A letter to Belgian publisher, Albert Lacroix who had sent Sand a few reading materials (a few pamphlets and a fragment of a poem). One of the pamphlets that Sand received was from a Russian writer, during a time before many in France had any exposure to or appreciation for Russian writers the likes of Tolstoy or Dostoevsky. In her response, Sand wrote: "I ask for four or five days to read, for I do not read quickly, being disturbed at every moment". The letter is matted with the original transmittal cover to an overall size of 11.75" x 16.25". Together with an engraving of Sand, 4.5" x 7.25" (sight), matted to the overall size of 11.5" x 15".
Condition: Letter is lightly toned and has some foxing, usual mail folds. Envelope has paper loss at bottom corner, minimally affects address. Engraving has light foxing.
Albert Lacroix was a Belgian publisher who worked with and launched renowned authors such as Émile Zola and Edmond and Jules de Goncourt. Lacroix even set up his own firm, Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Co, in order to sign Victor Hugo and publish Les Miserables.
