Description

George H.W. Bush Archive of Letters. A small group, all addressed to Richard B. Cramer, including two autograph letters signed and two typed letters signed by the 41st President. The two letters, 6.5" x 4.25", are written in ink on personalized Presidential notecards. The first, dated September 19, 1989 and one card front and back, thanks Cramer for sending "Dad's Oral History." The second, dated May 16, 1991, references an article in Esquire that Cramer had written and which mentioned Robin Bush. Pauline "Robin" Bush had been the oldest daughter of the Bush children and had tragically died at the age of four after battling leukemia. Bush wrote, "As I read about Robin the tears literally flowed. You understood. Thank you for your compassionate treatment of our still beloved 4 year old."

There are two typed letters, one written by Bush as Vice President, and the other as President. The earlier letter, one page, 6.25" x 8.5", is dated August 26, 1988. Bush writes to regretfully decline Cramer's request to accompany the campaign tour, saying "The logistics are the problem...It would do you no good at all. My decision has nothing to do with leaks or psychobabble. In your case, I have no fear whatsoever." The second letter, three pages, 7" x 10.5", is dated April 17, 1991 and responds to questions that Cramer had sent. The questions revolve around Saddam Hussein and the people of Kuwait.

These letters from George H.W. Bush are also accompanied by three autograph notes and letters to Cramer signed by Barbara Bush, signed "Barbara" or "Bar", all as First Lady. Barbara was a little sterner with the journalist, writing to correct facts and to voice her qualms about things being written. Barbara reviewed Richard's book in a letter date February 24, 1992, saying, "Frankly you paint a picture of us that I don't see. We do not talk in 'gees and gollies'. We are caring people. In my opinion you had pre-conceived ideas about George and have painted a picture of a man and a family I don't know." The dates range from September 1989 to February 1992, totaling 8 pages on various sized stationery. There are three other autograph notes and one typed letter to Cramer from others including Bob Dole, Joe Biden, and Christopher Cox. All of the letters, except for one, are accompanied by their original envelopes.

Condition: Usual mail folds are present. There are some small areas of ink smearing on one of Barbara Bush's letters. Transmittal covers have usual wear. Overall very good condition.
