George Gershwin Typed Letter Signed. One page on his personal letterhead, 8.5" x 10.75". New York, April 12, 1934. A letter to Mrs. M.J. Golden declining an invitation to perform at a concert for the benefit of the Dorothy Kahn Club for Crippled Children. Gershwin cites his current workload as the reason: "I am at present, and expect to be broadcasting in November, twice weekly. In addition to this I am writing an opera to be produced in the latter part of this year which takes all of my time." With a large and bold signature, "George Gershwin."

Gershwin is no doubt referring to his opera "Porgy and Bess", which he composed in 1934 and was based on a libretto by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin. "Porgy and Bess" was first performed the following year in New York. Featuring an all-black cast, it was initially poorly received but is now one of his best-known works with such classic songs as "Summertime."

Condition: Flattened folds and age toning. Evidence of repair to vertical fold on verso, and a tiny pinhole at very center where folds intersect.
