George Dewey Autograph Letter Signed "Geo. Dewey", including one partial letter unsigned. Totaling eight pages, both letters are 4.5" x 6.75" and written from the "Naval Hospital, Malta" to the naval hero's mother-in-law regarding his convalescence from a severe illness obtained during his journey to take command of the Juniata. The unsigned letter is dated Easter [March 25] 1883 and the ALS is dated April 17, 1883. With transmittal envelope (stamp torn away).

    More Information:

While travelling to take command of the Juniata at the Asiatic Station in 1882, the future admiral and "hero of Manila" became seriously ill at Malta. After a surgery which involved the removal of part of his liver, Dewey slowly recovered. These two letters shed light on his recuperation in Malta. In the Easter letter, Dewey reports that "At last I can write you with my own hand, although it will be with a bad pencil, for I am still in bed." On April 17 he writes, "I am slowly regaining my lost strength, now and then having a set-back. . . . Today is not one of my good days. . . . I will be well to leave this hospital early next month." Dewey continues that letter by reporting on the progress of his convalescence, including an update on his weight.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
