    Description

    George Armstrong Custer Autograph Letter Signed "Autie." One page, 4.75" x 4.25" (sight), Woodstock [Virginia], December 21, 1864, to his wife, whom he addresses as "Little Girl," in full: "'L'homme propose mais Dieu dispose' [Man proposes but God disposes] We will reach Winchester by to morrow at 5 P.M. All well no time to write." Custer's wife of ten months, Elizabeth "Libbie" Bacon, was waiting for him at Winchester when he penned this short note to her. A photograph taken four days later (on Christmas Day) by photographer William H. Bowlsby, shows Custer, his wife, and staff posing on the steps of M. Y. Mason mansion in Winchester, which he had procured for his headquarters [photograph is not included in this lot]. Smoothed folds. Slight damage is seen at the upper corners.

    With the original transmittal envelope accomplished in Custer's hand and addressed to "Mrs Genl Custer / Care of Genl Forsythe / Woodstock / Va / at Col Edwards." The letter and envelope are matted together with a portrait of the Boy General and framed to an overall size of 16.75" x 15.75".
