    Description

General Winfield Scott Hancock Two Letters Signed both with his stylized "Winfd Hancock" signature. The first: one page, 5" x 8", Headquarters 1st Corps., Washington, December 7, 1864, to Senator J. W. Grimes. A letter of transmittal for Orders and Circulars (not present) regarding the First Corps. Hancock was a career U.S. Army officer who served with distinction in the Civil War and later ran unsuccessfully for president. Fine condition with light folds and mounting traces to verso of integral blank leaf.

The second: five pages, 7.75" x 9.75", New York, February 10, 1873, to General J. W. Hofman of Philadelphia. In reply to a letter regarding the omission of Hofman's command in Hancock's official report of the Wilderness, in part: "...must be attributed to the neglect of those of my subordinates under whose immediate command you were, who failed to submit to me their reports of operations in that battle..." This battle took place on May 5-7, 1864, in Virginia against Robert E. Lee. Fine condition with mailing folds.

Also included is a fine, vintage engraving of Hancock, likely from the period of his presidential campaign. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
