DescriptionGeneral William Tecumseh Sherman Autograph Letter Signed "W.T. Sherman." Three pages, 5" x 8", Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, Washington D.C., March 27, 1874. The letter was written to General James S. Higby and it reads in part, "…I am 'General' but have no command of the Army. I don't even see the charges against an officer nor the proceedings of his trial…I often see it in the newspapers…" This letter is a great example of an officer's understanding of the court martial procedure.
The letter is in very fine condition; usual folds are present; slight soiling on the edges. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
