Sherman: Autograph Letter Signed (ALS).ALS, 1p., 5" x 8", on Head Quarters Military Division of the Mississippi, In the Field May 16, 1865, Fredericksburg, Va., fine save for one edge split at fold, in full: Mr. Henricksen, General Sherman thanks you kindly for the present of fine strawberries sent by your interesting little girls. May your crop be limitless and may you never again be disturbed by the "ugly shells" of war. W.T. Sherman, Maj Genl". After successfully completing his March to the Sea by capturing Savannah, Georgia, he continued his march through North Carolina. With no hope left to win the war, Confederate General Johnston surrendered to Sherman on April 26. Just 20 days later Sherman wrote this letter showing his softer side. A fine letter.
