General Robert Patterson Mexican War-dated Autograph Letter Signed to His Nephew. ALS "R. Patterson", 4pp., 8" x 10", Camp Santa Rosa, Jan. 15, 1847. In part: "... I regret with you that Gen. Scott came before I had taken Vera Cruz, which I was certain of doing and it would have been a feather in my cap - but I have seen so many ups and downs and so much variety of opinion & action in this war that I have made up my mind to agree with Pope that 'whatever is - is right' though I think it was wrong to take the apple from my mouth... I parted with General Taylor this morning at Victoria he returns under order from Gen. Scott to Monterey. I am now on my way down to Tampico in comma nod Gen Twiggs Division and my own 5000 men. Worth is ordered down from Monterey & Saltillo with about 4000 more. We will leave Tampico I suppose about 1st proximo with 10,000 men under Gen. Scott, myself, Twiggs, north, Pillow, Whitman & Shields. I am second in rank." The letter proceeds in diary fashion with brief entries detailing his passage to Tampico, with a final lengthy entry made on Jan. 23rd writing that he had arrived "amid a flourish of trumpets and firing of cannon..."Great content regarding the last days of the war. Patterson had been considered to command the expedition to Veracruz, as noted in his letter, the command would go to Scott. Patterson did receive command of a Volunteer Division and saw action during the siege of Veracruz and was wounded at the Battle of Cerro Gordo. Would also serve in the Civil War, although his service was brief; he was mustered out in July 1861 after a poor performance at the Battle of Hoke's Run. Very good condition with light soiling and a few repairs made to folds. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
