General Robert Howe Autograph Document Signed "Robert Howe." One page, 6.5" x 8", Headquarters Lower Salem, August 11, 1779. Howe signs order No. 34, which states, in part:
"I do myself the pleasure to transmit an order expressive of the approbation I so truly have of your good conduct & that of officers & men under your command in the late affair within the Enemies lines...".

Accompanying this document is an autograph document signed by Howe's aide-de-camp, dated August 7, 1779, being the extract of an order given by Howe four days earlier extolling the gallantry of Colonel White, commander of the Fourth Continental Dragoons, in a night action two days prior. At the time these orders were written, both the Continental and British armies had occupied Salem County in hopes of securing provisions. Several skirmishes took place between British regulars and local militia. The paper is toned on both examples with some minor splits and closed tears and the usual fold creases, else very good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
