General Mansfield Lovell Autograph Letter Signed with Capture of New Orleans Content. Four pages of a bifolium, 5" x 7.75", Camp Moors, Louisiana; April 30, 1862. In a letter addressed to his wife, the Confederate Major General describes the capture of New Orleans. It reads in part: "... I hear some ridiculous stories about the fall of New Orleans. The truth is that the tremendous swell of the river carried away the lines of obstructions at the forts...and in the dark the whole fleet pushed up and while some engaged the forts the remainder thirteen in number pushed by...When the ships attacked our batteries there we detained them for an hour and a half with 16 guns until every pound of powder had been expended. When the vessels anchored opposite the city, there was nothing for me to do with infantry but to evacuate or allow them to bombard a city full of women and children...I refused to surrender anything and advised the Mayor to do the same - After my troops had all gone I left in the last car..." Signed, "Mansfield."

Condition: 3.75" closed tear on first page. Small ink smudge that does not affect text. Lightly rubbed.
