    General Joseph E. Johnston Autograph Letter Signed Following the Battle of Seven Pines. Two pages, 5.75" x 7.25", Amelia Spring [Virginia]; July 22, 1862. Addressed to John L. Manning, the Governor of South Carolina from 1852-1854. Johnston was still recovering from the wounds he received the previous month at the Battle of Seven Pines. It reads in part: "Your letter of the 5th was sent to me from Richmond by your son - I immediately wrote to the war department recommending his being commissioned in the provisional army on account of services, zeal, intelligence & hereditary courage - adding that if the commission should be conferred I hoped to place the young gentleman on my staff..." Signed, "J. E. Johnston." Accompanied by a print of an engraved portrait of Johnston measuring 7" x 11".

    Condition: Smoothed folds.
