    Description

    General Henry Halleck Letter Signed to General U. S. Grant. One page, 5" x 7.75", St. Louis, December 19, 1861, on letterhead reading, "Head Quarters, Department of the Missouri." Major General Halleck, a critic of Grant's drinking and lack of discipline, writes this terse letter, suggesting his disdain for the brigadier general after an unidentified prisoner exchange. "By what authority did you send back exchanged prisioners [sic]? They are not under assumed names all were identified here before exchange." Minor soiling with smoothed folds.
