    General George Patton Military Appointment Signed "GS Patton Jr" as Colonel of 5th Cavalry. One partially printed page, 10.5" x 8", Fort Clark, Texas; August 4, 1938. Appointing "Private 1/class Edward Powell, 6271445, Troop 'E'; 5th Cavalry...Corporal, Troop 'E', 5th Cavalry, Army of the United States." With a vignette of the United States Seal at the top margin.

    Following graduation from the U.S. Military Academy in 1909, Patton sought to study with the greatest swordsman in Europe. Upon his return to the States, Patton became an instructor at the Mounted Service School where he was named the Army's youngest-ever "Master of the Sword." During this time, Patton improved and modernized the Army's cavalry saber fencing techniques. The year after this appointment was made, Patton began lobbying politicians and army brass to build armored cavalry units.

    Condition: Flattened folds, with additional creasing at the edges and corners. Soiling and staining at the top and bottom margins. Two tears at the top edge. Patton's signature is slightly smudged.
