GENERAL BEAUREGARD SIGNED CHECK. Ultimately, P.G.T. Beauregard was one of only eight full generals in the Confederacy.  But he's best known for issuing the order that started it all at Fort Sumter.  In fact, he survived the Civil War unscathed, and became one of the very few who prospered after the Southern surrender.  As an asterisk to his post-war career, he plied speaking engagements to advocate civil liberties for the recently freed slaves.  He enjoyed his later years in New Orleans where, in 1879, he issued this offered check.  Drawn from his account with the Mutual National Bank (St. Louis), this check has minor tears (which may be indicative of its cancellation).  It was neatly folded in quarters (VG/EX) and his flowing signature merits 8 in quality, due strictly to a slight bleed in the underscored flourish.
