Vice Presidential cufflinks presented to and worn by Ed White II.

Gemini 4: Cufflinks and a Signed Photo Presented by Vice President Hubert Humphrey to Ed White II in 1965 and Directly from His Personal Collection. This pair of gold-colored men's cufflinks featuring the vice presidential seal, worn by White, had been presented to him on his trip to Washington, D.C. in June 1965, just days after his Gemini 4 mission. This was quite an exciting trip for the White and McDivitt families. They all flew up from Houston to Andrews Air Force Base and helicoptered over to the White House lawn. Lady Bird Johnson insisted they all spend the night and the president called them "Christopher Columbuses of the twentieth century." At a State Department reception that night, Johnson surprised them all by saying that he wanted White, McDivitt, and their wives to leave immediately for the Paris Air Show where Yuri Gagarin and the Soviet space program was making quite an impression internationally. The wives, who had not packed for this, literally borrowed clothes from Mrs. Johnson and her daughters. It was well after midnight when the Presidential plane took off; Humphrey was appointed to accompany them on this trip. The American delegation was the hit of the show and the Gemini 4 astronauts got to meet Yuri Gagarin. Humphrey took the opportunity to spend some time in serious talks with French President de Gaulle about U.S. policies in Vietnam and the Dominican Republic. As Humphrey was the chairman of Johnson's space council, he took a great interest in the U.S. space missions. Humphrey and White developed a close and mutually respectful relationship, regularly exchanging letters from that time forward. Fine condition with some definite evidence of wear.

Included with this lot is a 10" x 8" color NASA photo (blue letter "S-65-62582"). It shows White, Humphrey, and McDivitt in the backseat of a convertible limousine surrounded by Secret Service agents as they leave the Capitol for their parade. It has been signed by the vice president: "To Lt. Col. Edward White - With Warm regards and/ admiration Hubert H Humphrey". Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a signed certificate of authenticity from Ed White III.
