DescriptionFritz Leiber. "The Bait" Archive, including:
Combination Original Corrected Typescript and Autograph Manuscript. Twelve pages, 8.5" x 11", plain paper, partially written in pencil. Leiber began the story on the typewriter, then switched to writing longhand in the middle of page three. It appears that Leiber finished the short story on page 3, where he types "THE END", then crosses out the last four typed lines, and continues the story in his handwriting, perhaps after a shock of inspiration or at editor Stuart David Schiff's insistence. Includes the original mailing envelope from Leiber to Schiff. The pages here are in fine condition, with usual mailing folds to the first three pages.
Uncorrected Typescript. Five pages, 8.5" x 11", plain paper. Leiber has written "about 11,000 words" in his own hand at the top of the first page. Fine condition.
Autograph Letter Signed, with envelope. Two pages, 4" x 6", San Francisco, June 12, 1975, to Stuart David Schiff, blue ink. A friendly note giving Schiff permission to reprint "The Bait" in Schiff's publication Whispers. Fine condition.
Tim Kirk. Original Illustration for "The Bait". Signed by the artist at bottom left. Measures 6.75" x 9", and affixed to a white paper backing page. This beautiful black ink illustration was included in Schiff's Whispers II anthology in 1979. On the verso, Schiff has stamped the illustration "Property of Stuart David Schiff Whispers / Whispers Press." Discoloration from the aging paste on the verso of the illustration, else fine condition.
"The Bait" is one short story in Leiber's vast epic of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. The story originally appeared in Stuart Davis Schiff's Whispers in December 1973. Later, the vignette was included in Leiber's Swords and Ice Magic, a 1977 hardcover collection in the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser series, and Schiff's Whispers II anthology in 1979. From the Robert and Diane Yaspan Collection.
