Frederick Opper Signed Sketch and Autograph Letter Signed "F. Opper." Two pages, 8.25" x 7", New York American and Journal Stationery, New York, September 24th, 1902. The letter mentions Opper's dismay at having to pay shipping charges on some original prints of his that were sent to him from England.
The letter is in fine condition; usual folds are present; paper clip has rusted and stained the paper in the upper left corner; mounting traces present on verso.
The sketch is one page, 3.5" x 5.5", np, dated May 14th, 1927. It is signed in the lower right as, "F.B. Opper." The sketch is of one of Opper's famous characters, named Happy Hooligan. Happy appeared in William Randolph Hearst's newspapers beginning in 1900, as the good-natured hobo who was always smiling despite his misfortunes. He was a doer of good deeds and was often a foil for his brother Gloomy Gus.
The sketch is accompanied by a 4.5" x 7" photograph of Opper; both items have been laid down on a sturdy backing sheet. The sketch is in very fine condition. A wonderful set of items from one of America's favorite illustrators. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
