Frederick Douglass Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5" x 8.25", Rochester, New York, August 27, 1867. In the years following the Civil War, the famed abolitionist and orator continued his fight for equal rights for all American citizens by giving lectures across the county. Addressed to W.H. Richardson, Douglass writes regarding the proposal of one such lecture, in full: "Of the evenings proposed, I select that of the 23d. of December for my lecture to be delivered in Malden. The subject will depend somewhat on the state of the country at the time the lecture is to be delivered. Of course, if I am heard in Malden, I must speak on some subject involving either Justice, Liberty or Patriotism." Docketed on the verso with an additional ink notation, not in Douglass' hand, in the upper right corner.

Condition: Mildly toned along the vertical fold and the left edge. The ink notation in the upper right corner was smudged slightly and has left some ghosting in the text.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
