Franz Liszt Autograph Letter Signed "F. Liszt." Two pages, 4.5" x 7", in French, Rome, January 10, 1880. In 1847, the Hungarian composer and piano virtuoso, Franz Liszt (1811-1886), accepted a position as court conductor and piano teacher in Weimar [Germany] at the behest of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia. Here he spent the next fifteen years of his life until a series of personal tragedies led him to seek a life of solitude in the monastery of Madonna del Rosario outside of Rome. Liszt stayed in Rome until 1869, when he returned to Weimar to begin teaching piano master classes for a few months out of the year. In 1876 he began doing the same at the Hungarian Music Academy in Budapest, beginning what he would call his "vie trifurquée," his three-fold life, migrating between Weimar, Budapest, and Rome until his death in 1886.

Writing to an unknown female friend to whom he is apparently travelling to visit and whom he addresses as "Chère excellente amie," Liszt expresses his joy at seeing her in a few days and asks if she could pick him up at the train station. Light adhesive staining of the upper and left edges and at places within the letter, not affecting the text. Small ink spots. Remnant of archival tape at the upper edge on the verso.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
