Franklin Pierce Signed Cover and Address, circa 1856. Found in the upper right corner of a 9.75" x 6.75" cover addressed (in his hand) to Senator George M. Dallas, a former U.S. vice president under President James K. Polk, President Pierce has placed his bold and distinctive signature. Pierce here transmits a copy of his annual address, in booklet form of twenty-four uncut pages, measuring 6.25" x 9.75", and included in this lot, to both Houses of Congress on December 31, 1855, at the request of Senator Dallas.

On the verso of the cover is a copy of the original Dallas letter to Mr. Pierce. In it, the senator praises the president for providing a "lucid and satisfactory view of the Cent. American controversy" whereby the U.S. and British governments have both agreed that neither would ever "occupy, or fortify, or colonize, or assume or exercise any dominion over Nicaragua, Costa Rica, the Mosquito Coast, or any part of Central America."

Condition: The cover is toned and lightly soiled with adhesive staining near the middle. A small .75" tear at the upper edge touches the "F" in Pierce's signature.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
