Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan: Inscription and Signature from Pierce Together with Free Frank from Buchanan. Franklin Pierce Inscription and Signature. One partial page, 4.25" x 3", no place, August 10, 1863, to "Mrs. Kay". An ink inscription and signature by the former president which reads in full: "For Mrs. Kay, / with the regards of / Franklin Pierce / Aug., 10, 1863." It is written on the verso of a partial page from Dora Greenwell's The Patience of Hope. [Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1863]. This seems to indicate it was initially a book inscription but was later removed by an autograph collector. Professionally window mounted to the overall size of 5.25" x 4.75". Auction certificate from RR Auctions, Catalog 591, item 143, accompanies the lot. Very gently toned. Together with:

James Buchanan Free Frank Signature. Center panel measures 5.25" x 3", "Washington City D.C.", December 25, [1836], to John Reynolds. Buchanan addresses the panel to "John Reynolds Esquire / Lancaster / Pennsylvania" and is franked "Free / James Buchanan" in the upper right corner. Unfolded, it measures 9.75" x 8". John Reynolds ran the Lancaster Journal from 1820 to 1834 and took the paper from a Federalist publication to one more aligned with the Jacksonian ideals of the early Democratic party. Buchanan was a close friend of the Reynolds family and was affectionately called "Uncle Buckwheat" by the children. In 1837, Senator Buchanan nominated Reynolds' son, John F. Reynolds, to the United States Military Academy in West Point. Major General Reynolds was later killed in action on the first day of Gettysburg. Auction certificate from RR Auctions, Catalog 589, item 18, accompanies the lot. Contemporary ink annotation with pencil notation to verso. Remnants of a red wax seal with a small area of loss from its removal. Overall, in fine condition.
