Franklin Pierce and Jefferson Davis Military Appointment Signed. One partially-printed vellum page, 14" x 18.75" (sight), Washington, July 23, 1856, appointing "Thomas K. Jackson . . . First Lieutenant in the Eighth Regiment of Infantry." Countersigned by Jefferson Davis as secretary of war. Folds. Matted and framed to an overall size of 20" x 24.5".

Thomas Klugh Jackson (1828-1902), an 1848 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, spent the majority of his early military career on the frontiers of Texas and New Mexico. He resigned his commission in April 1861 and joined his native South Carolina by entering the service of the Confederate States. Following an exchange, he returned to duty in the commissary department in Mississippi and Alabama before he surrendered with Lt. Gen. Robert Taylor on May 13, 1865.
