Excellent TLS by FDR as Governor of New York, 1p, 8 x10 ½." On State of New York, Executive Chamber, Albany stationery, but written "At Warm Springs, Georgia," May 4, 1932, with original transmittal envelope, FDR writes to Mrs. T. J. Wells, Bouquet, New York, making an interesting observation about his own financial situation at the time he was conducting his first campaign for President of the United States of America: "Dear Mrs. Wells:/ Thank you for letting me know about that interesting model. I should like much to see it some day, but I fear that certainly for the present I would not be able to spare any money to purchase it./ Very sincerely yours,/ Franklin D. Roosevelt." Former Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt collected ship models and many are on display at the FDR library in Hyde Park, New York. At the time of this letter, FDR was on the campaign trail. At the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago eight weeks later, June 27 to July 2, 1932, Governor Roosevelt received 666 ¼ votes on the first ballot, 99 ¾ votes short of the nomination with former New York Governor Alfred E. Smith, the 1928 nominee, second with 201 ¾ votes. FDR won the nomination on the fourth ballot and the November election over President Herbert Hoover in a landslide. An interesting letter during a very important period of time in FDR's long political life.
