Franklin D. Roosevelt. Typed Letter Signed. One page 4to, State of New York, Executive Chamber letterhead, from Warm Springs, Georgia, December 7, 1931, ten years to the day before Pearl Harbor, while FDR was Governor of New York to Miss Stella Akin, Savannah, Georgia, with original transmittal envelope. FDR writes: "My dear Miss Akin:/ I am grateful to you and to the State Democratic Executive Committee for the resolution passed at the recent meeting and for your kindness in sending a copy to me./ I am leaving for Albany in a few days and will be back here as soon as the Legislature adjourns. I shall hope to have the pleasure of seeing you at that time./ Very sincerely yours,/ Franklin D. Roosevelt." Stella Akin was an attorney, judge, and Democratic Party operative, who was appointed to the office of the Attorney General of the United States during FDR's first Administration. Stella Akin was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1897. After a public school education in Savannah, she read law and became the first woman admitted to the Georgia bar in 1917. The following year, she began practicing law in Savannah. In 1933, FDR appointed Akin to serve as a special assistant to the Attorney General. In 1957, she was appointed to fill an unexpired term as judge of Savannah's municipal court. During her career, Akin held many firsts for women in Georgia's legal profession. She died in Savannah on October 8, 1972. A very interesting letter from FDR to an important figure in southern women's history, signed by FDR ten years to the day before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, when FDR was President of the United States of America.
