A wonderful signed black and white photograph of FDR seated at his desk, right profile, fountain pen in hand with a scattering of papers on the desk in front of him. FDR inscribes the photograph in the lower margin to King Haakon, "For Mr. Haakon from Franklin D. Roosevelt". With copyright of Harris & Ewing in lower left corner. The photograph is framed to the overall size of 12.75" x 11.5"; a small plaque on the frame reads, "This wood was part of the White House roof erected about 1817 and removed in 1927." At the lower right corner is affixed a metal presidential seal.

Haakon VII (1872-1957) was Prince Carl of Denmark before becoming the first king of Norway. His reign lasted from 1905 until his death in 1957. His strong leadership of Norway during the German invasion and five-year occupation during WWII gained him great respect around the world and won him the affection of the Norwegian people. During the Norwegian royal family's exile in WWII, Haakon's daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Märtha, and the royal children sought refuge in Washington, D.C., after receiving an invitation by the President to stay at the White House.

Condition: Silvering at edges of photograph. The signature is bold and the overall appearance is good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
