Franklin D. Roosevelt Partial Draft of Speech with Handwritten Edits. One page, 8.5" x 11", n.p.; circa 1932. A partial draft (typed) of a speech in which Roosevelt made handwritten edits. The edited draft appears to be for a speech for the 1932 presidential campaign in which Democratic nominee Roosevelt ran against Republican President Herbert Hoover.
Roosevelt's holographic edits are in italics:
"If the promises to be made in the approaching national campaign are as worthless as some of them have been in the past we are merely preparing for more political and economic disillusionment.

The moment a political party writes a platform and nominates a leader doe office it should plainly outline what it promises to do if it controls the government and then write at the bottom of it: 'If at the end of our term of office we have not demonstrated an honest and determined effort to attain the above objectives we pledge ourselves not to seek a return to power.' This should apply to all candidates.

This may seem extreme to some of the old-fashioned politicians, but it will make all campaign promises far more personally binding than they have been in the recent past. If those who aspire to public office also truly wish to be public servants, every one of them will proclaim that this pledge is only a square deal to the people they wish to serve.

No higher standard of public service can be brought about unless public servants adopt a more forthright..."

An exceptional document showing Franklin D. Roosevelt's crafting a campaign speech, probably for 1932 presidential campaign against Hebert Hoover. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Age toning, and a few tiny holes at lower right corner. Traces of rust stain from a paper clip at top left and lower right corners.
