Franklin D. Roosevelt Appointment and Photograph Signed, along with other items related to Agriculture Secretary Claude Wickard. In September 1940, Agriculture Secretary Henry Wallace resigned and Claude Wickard (1893-1967) was appointed secretary, a position he held until 1945. From a farming background, Wickard promoted farm production during his time as a cabinet member during World War II, believing that increased production would help win the war.

FDR Appointment Signed as president. One sheet, 23" x 19", Washington, February 29, 1940, appointing Claude R. Wickard of Indiana "Under Secretary of Agriculture." This document is darkly toned and bears a seal in the lower left corner. Minor mat burn occurs around the extreme edges. The appointment is countersigned by Agricultural Secretary Henry Wallace.

FDR Photograph Signed. B/W, 9.25" x 12.5", "For Claude R. Wickard with my affectionate regards [signed] Franklin D. Roosevelt."

Also included are three original political cartoons regarding Wickard. One illustrates his belief that food production would help win the war, showing Secretary Wickard asking the three "Public Enemies" (Hitler, Mussolini, Hirohito) to "Move over" and make room for another public enemy: "Hoarders of Canned Goods." The other two cartoons comment on Wickard's retirement as agriculture secretary. Each is signed by the illustrator, C. K. Berryman of the Evening Star; two are dated December 29, 1942, and June 1945; the third is undated. Additionally included is a printed invitation to the "Democratic Victory Dinner in honor of Franklin Delano Roosevelt . . . and John Nance Garner" on March 4, 1937 (8.5" x 10.75").
