Franklin D. Roosevelt 1936 Warm Springs Typed Letter Signed with One Photograph and Program. One page with integral blank, 7" x 9", on White House letterhead, Washington, January 30, 1936. Addressed to James Francis Thaddeus O'Connor, comptroller of the currency whom FDR affectionately calls "Jefty," Roosevelt, who writes this letter on his birthday, says in full: "One of the nicest thrills I had on my birthday was the receipt of your letter and your very generous check for Warm Springs. Today, of course, my mind is dwelling on Warm Springs and all that is being done for the crippled and underprivileged children of the country. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart." Roosevelt first visited Warm Springs, Georgia, in 1924, three years after contracting polio. He purchased a resort in the town in 1927 and founded the Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. The small resort house became his residence during his presidency and was known as the Little White House. It was at the Little White House that Roosevelt died in 1945.With a 10" x 8" black and white photograph of the president and first lady riding in an open top vehicle through an adoring crowd and an 8.5" x 11" program to "The President's Birthday Ball," sixty-four unpaginated pages and printed covers, celebrating Roosevelt's sixtieth birthday in 1942.
James F.T. O'Connor (1886-1949) was appointed comptroller of the currency by Roosevelt in 1933 during the Great Depression. As comptroller, he oversaw the creation of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. He resigned his position in 1938 and was nominated two years later, again by Roosevelt, as a federal judge for the Southern District of California, a position he held until his death.
Condition: Six binding holes along the left margin of the letter with adhesive staining in the lower half of near the lower edge and toning along the upper edge. The printed covers of the program are toned with a spot of soiling near the lower left corner. Light foxing in places throughout. The right and left edges of the photograph are slightly rolled inward.
