Description
Francisco "Pancho" Villa Oversized Photograph Signed "Francisco Villa." Sepia toned portrait, 7" x 11", Ciudad Juarez, circa February 1914. Copyright stamp for Alexander & Green, El Paso at the lower left corner. Villa signs in fountain pen across his chest. Signed images of Villas are very scarce, and we have handled only a handful of others. In 1914, during the height of the Mexican Revolution, Venustiano Carranza, leader of the Constitutional Army, called for a convention to meet in the city of Aguascalientes to settle the differences between the four main generals who had been responsible for overthrowing General Victoriano Huerta. General Eualio Gutierrez was elected president with Villa serving as the commander of the Conventionalist Army. Outwardly, Villa pretended to accept the presidency of Gutierrez, but a month after the election, Villa and Emiliano Zapata reconciled and captured Mexico City. Gutierrez declared the two traitors, and fled to San Luis Potosí. He was forced to resign the presidency six months later, escaping into self-imposed exile in the United States, infuriating Villa. In 1920, Villa made an agreement with the Mexican government to remove himself from political hostilities, but he was assassinated three years later, at the age of 45, after he re-involved himself in Mexican politics.
Condition: Toning throughout with small spots of soiling. Creasing and wear at the corners. Paper loss at the bottom corners. Bent and creased at the bottom center. Uneven right edge. Staining from tape on verso.
