Florence Nightingale Autograph Letter Signed "Florence Nightingale." Two pages of a bifolium, 7.25" x 9", Scutari, Turkey "Barrack Hospital"; July 10, 1856. Addressed to Lord Stratford de Redcliffe, a thank you letter and acknowledgement of the Sultan's generous donation to the British hospitals. The letter reads in full:

"I beg to thank your Excellency for your kind letter of July 8, & for the advice which it contains, which I have hastened to follow by referring the matter touching the Sultan's donation to the Nurses and its distribution to authority at home. Your Excellency wishes to pay the money somewhere to my account without delay. Should you think it right to pay it into Glyn's [Glyn, Mills & Co.] in London, it may there await its distribution. I have stated to Lord Panmure the views which your Excellency entertains concerning the Establishments which were in His Majesty's contemplation. Believe me to remain dear Lord Stratford Your Excellency's oblged & obedt servt." With docketing on verso.

When news reached England of the terrible conditions of the hospitals in the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale embarked upon a selfless and potentially deadly crusade to care for the sick and dying. In 1854, she travelled to Scutari with 30-some volunteer nurses and undertook the daunting task of nursing thousands of wounded and infected British troops. Under Nightingale's direction, a Sanitary Commission was brought in to address the sanitation and ventilation concerns, dramatically lowering the death rate at the hospital. Nightingale was hailed a hero and given the name "The Lady with the Lamp" for her never-ending dedication to caring for her charges, whatever the time of day or night. In recognition of her work, Sultan Abdulmecid made a large donation to the nurses and hospitals and presented Nightingale with a diamond and carnelian bracelet.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, with light uneven toning and foxing. Mounting residue on verso.
